A Night of Reggae Music During My French Immersion Stay in Montpellier

So me and some of the other students who are here learning French in France decided we had been working very hard during our immersion classes and deserved a bit of fun in the beautiful city of Montpellier. We all had our various lessons early in the morning and particularly the students on the intensive French course wanted to have a clear head so we agreed a quieter night would be nice.

Anisa’s Idea for A Fun Evening Out for French Students in Montpellier

As we were deciding where to go in the kitchen at the ILA French School residence a Swedish girl called Anisa told us about a cool little place that was very close called ‘La Pleine Lune’ which translates as ‘The Full Moon’. She told us it was cheap, just down the road and normally had a bit of live music on so it sounded perfect. She told us that the staff there were really nice and talkative and helpful to people learning French in France. Apparently she had been going there since she started her French immersion course and they were very patient with her and made her feel welcome.

Now however Anisa was very proficient and her French language skills have developed loads whilst she has been at the immersion school. She started on just the standard course but then decided to take the extra DELF lessons as well so she was to a pretty high level. She lead the way as we headed off into the night and she was right the place was very close.

As we came into the bar we were greeted by a wave of reggae music. There was a DJ and a singer on stage bobbing around in front of several jolly looking people. The bartender greeted Anisa warmly. The two of them exchanged pleasantries in fluent French that was very impressive on Anisa’s part. It made me want to be as proficient in French as her and made me looking forward to the day where I can just walk into a place and chat comfortably with French locals.

Practicing My French With the Bartenders of Montpellier

After Anisa had got her cocktail I stepped forward and the bartender introduced himself as Malik. As Anisa had described he was super patient and happy to talk with me which was nice and I managed to use some of the things I had learnt just that day on my French immersion course. I ordered a beer which was a very reasonable price and Malik told me to enjoy the night. We headed out to the terrace area and I was delighted to see they had tons of space and tons of patio heaters. We all cosied up around one of these lovely glowing hot lamps and made a toast to learning French in France.

After we got a bit jolly we headed in and onto the dance floor. The singer was clearly in his element and his swaying around on stage got us all moving. The atmosphere was great; warm and friendly with smiles all round and the other French students were loving it as well.

Just at this point Malik swooped in and offered us all a free shot. We gratefully took them and had another toast with him. After this it was difficult to pull ourselves away as we were having such a great time. Luckily the DELF students were particularly vigilant as their course is particularly intensive and they need to be at the top of their game. So we called it a night and headed back to the ILA language school residence. It was another great night during our time learning French in France. We managed to get home in time for a proper night’s sleep so we were fresh for another day of our French immersion course in Montpellier.
